Tim Burton: Melancholy, Mirth and Magic, Part 2
February 6–24
Starting out as an animator for Walt Disney Studios before moving on to direct live-action feature films, Tim Burton brought a cartoonist’s eye and a horror maven’s delight in the macabre to a string of offbeat comedies and dark fantasies that surprised with their wicked wit and visual flair, including PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE, BEETLEJUICE, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and the landmark superhero adaptation BATMAN (1989).

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS
25th Anniversary!
Tim Burton, following the red-hot box office success of PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE, BEETLEJUICE and BATMAN, crafted this delicate gothic fairytale about an artificial man, soulfully played by Johnny Depp. His loving if daft inventor, Vincent Price (in his final screen role), dies before finishing poor Edward, and leaves him with scissors for hands. When fortune comes calling in the form of Avon lady Dianne Wiest, Edward is adopted into a new world of pastel suburbia, a place where someone like him might have difficulty fitting in, but the love and understanding shown by Wiest, even-keeled husband Alan Arkin and their daughter Winona Ryder help Edward try to find his way in the world.

PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE
Tim Burton's feature debut represents the improbably weird beginning to his improbably weird mainstream career. Paul Reubens makes the leap from cabaret theater to major studio movie with his sui generis Pee-wee Herman character, along with his toys, gadgets, colorful friends and, of course, his beloved bike. Its theft sets Pee-wee on a cross-country quest, ending on the Warner Bros. studio lot. Co-scripted by Reubens and future SNL star Phil Hartman.

BATMAN (1989)
"Ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight?" Tim Burton brought the Dark Knight Detective to the big screen in this landmark comic book adaptation, breaking from the camp of the '60s TV show and reestablishing the edgy aspects of the character. Jack Nicholson as the Joker keeps things from getting too serious, while Michael Keaton, mainly a comedian and a controversial choice to play Bruce Wayne/Batman, surprised many with his convincing darkness. Score by Danny Elfman, with songs by Prince, including his final #1 hit (to date…), "Batdance."

BATMAN RETURNS
Michael Keaton returns to play the Caped Crusader in this dark and moody sequel to the 1989 blockbuster hit. The Joker no longer terrorizes Gotham City, but new threats arise in the person of the ghastly Penguin (Danny DeVito), corrupt businessman Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) and masked vigilante Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer, slinky and scene-stealing).

MARS ATTACKS!
Based on the iconic '60s Topps trading cards — drawn and painted by legendary pulp artists Wally Wood and Norman Saunders — this film is Burton's winking homage to the entire genre of Cold War-era alien invasion films of the 1950s and 1960s, in all their compelling kitsch. Gleefully gruesome and darkly satirical, the film has gained a cult following over the years among those able to appreciate its edgy combination of sci-fi horror and comedy. The impressive cast includes Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close and a young Natalie Portman as the First Family, with supporting turns from Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Martin Short, Michael J. Fox, Danny DeVito, Rod Steiger, Pam Grier, Jim Brown, Jack Black, Lukas Haas, Sylvia Sidney, Lisa Marie and Tom Jones.

BIG FISH
When his estranged father falls ill, Will (Billy Crudup) reluctantly returns home with his pregnant wife Marion Cotillard, at the behest of his loving mother Jessica Lange, uneager to be subjected to the tall tales of his father Edward (Albert Finney). Taking advantage of his last opportunity, Will makes a plea for the truth about his father’s past. Tim Burton delights at showing the fantastic exploits of the young Edward (Ewan McGregor) as he encounters witches and giants, and joins the circus in hopes of meeting the love of his life Alison Lohman. With a terrific supporting cast including Steve Buscemi, Danny DeVito and Helena Bonham Carter, Burton lovingly crafts a modern-day fairy tale.
