THE MINISTER [L'exercice de l'État]

Opening with a surreally erotic dream sequence, Pierre Schöller's award-winning film immediately announces that this isn't politics as usual. Harried minister of transport Bertrand Saint-Jean (Dardennes brothers' regular Olivier Gourmet) is awakened in the night to respond to a horrific bus accident. His reward: being asked by his superiors to use it as political cover to push through a privatization scheme. A must-see for political junkies and neo-noir aficionados. FIPRESCI Prize, Un Certain Regard, 2011 Cannes Film Festival; Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor (Michel Blanc, as Saint-Jean's chief of staff), 2012 César Awards.

DIR/SCR Pierre Schöller; PROD Jean-Pierre Dardenne, Luc Dardenne, Denis Freyd. France/Belgium, 2011, color, 115 min. In French with English subtitles. NOT RATED S V L
