LORE
2012 Oscar Selection, Australia
After their SS officer father and mother are taken into custody by the occupying Allied forces, 14-year-old Lore and her four younger siblings set out on foot, hoping to reach their grandmother in Hamburg, 500 miles away. Begging and scheming their way through the German countryside, they meet a young Jewish man. Repulsed yet attracted to the person she was taught to hate, Lore grapples with burgeoning feelings. With a Malickian eye for natural detail, this beautiful portrait of destruction and renewal features a star-making turn by newcomer Saskia Rosendahl as Lore.
