IN THE SHADOW [Ve stínu]
2012 Oscar Selection, Czech Republic

In 1950s Prague, police detective Hakl (Ivan Trojan) is investigating a jewelry store heist, until East German police specialist Zenke (Sebastian Koch, THE LIVES OF OTHERS) arrives and takes over. Zenke believes members of the Jewish community are responsible, and that an underground ring may be smuggling funds to Israel. Unconvinced, Hakl continues his own investigation. But which version of the truth do the Communist authorities prefer to find? Acclaimed filmmaker David Ondříĉek (ONE HAND CAN'T CLAP, 2003 AFI European Union Film Showcase) spins a suspenseful noir yarn, set against the mistrust and fear of postwar Czechoslovakia.
