BARBARA
2012 Oscar Selection, Germany
Writer/director Christian Petzold and actress Nina Hoss, whose previous collaborations include SOMETHING TO REMIND ME, WOLFSBURG (2003 AFI European Union Film Showcase), YELLA (2007 AFI European Union Film Showcase) and JERICHOW, reunite for their finest film yet, a suspenseful mood piece set in 1980s East Germany. Hoss portrays Barbara, a doctor recently sent down from a desirable post in East Berlin to a rural hospital on the Baltic coast. There, she remains aloof from her new colleagues, including the friendly overtures of chief physician André (Ronald Zehrfeld). The reason soon becomes clear: Barbara's West German lover Jörg (Mark Waschke), has sneaked across the border and is helping to plan her escape to Denmark. At the same time, Barbara must treat a troubled young patient, Stella (Jasna Fritzi Bauer), who has escaped from a juvenile detention center. As pressures mount and the threat of detection by the Stasi increases, Barbara must make an important decision, one fraught with ethical and existential weight. Best Director, 2012 Berlin Film Festival; Official Selection, Karlovy Vary, Telluride, Toronto and New York Film Festivals.
