While this film is the most straightforward of David Lynch’s oeuvre, it is nevertheless stamped with the filmmaker’s visual flair and quirky humor. Alvin Straight (Richard Farnsworth) takes off on a 240- mile journey on his trusty John Deere lawnmower to visit his estranged brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton), who has suffered a stroke. Billed as a “coming-of-old-age” story, filmmaker Sarah Friedland’s poignant feature debut considers the fears and desires of those who are often relegated to the periphery in cinema and society. Ruth (Kathleen Chalfant), an aging widow and retired cook, suffers from dementia. No longer able to recognize her loved ones, she is checked into an assisted living facility by her conflicted son (H. Jon Benjamin), and thus begins a rocky, uncertain transition into the next chapter of her twilight years.
