THE PAST [Le Passé]

Iranian writer/director Asghar Farhadi (Oscar winner, A
SEPARATION), makes a smooth transition to France with this
film, the filmmaker’s grasp of moral complexity and the nuances
of family psychology fully intact. THE ARTIST’s Bérénice Bejo
was awarded the Best Actress award at Cannes for her
performance as Marie, twice-married and now in need of a
quick divorce from her amicably estranged husband Ahmad
(Ali Mosaffa) before she can marry her new love, Samir (Tahar
Rahim). Returning to Paris after four years away in Tehran in
order to finalize the divorce, Ahmad, ironically, becomes
reintegrated into this unconventional family structure as an
honest broker, slowly unraveling the tangled web of grudges,
secrets, half-truths and misunderstandings circulating among
Marie, her daughters Lucie (Pauline Burlet) and Léa (Jeanne
Jestin), and Samir and his son Fouad (Elyes Aguis). Prize of the

fan favorites for their grappling exploits and charismatic
showmanship. But one of the duo’s worsening identity crisis

Sébastien Betbeder’s inventive indie rom-com combines 16mm
New Wave-inspired visuals, whimsical animation, reality-style
confessionals and a raft of pop cultural references, in-jokes
and appropriations to create a 21st century portrait of young
Parisians in love. Arman, a 33-year-old hipster with a comb-
over and an affinity for Judd Apatow’s FUNNY PEOPLE, half-
gallantly, half-accidentally saves the beautiful Amélie from a pair
of muggers. And their meet-cute (and dangerous) allows love
to bloom. Meanwhile Benjamin, Arman’s best friend from art
school, has recently suffered a stroke, and falls for his physical

Franck is a regular at a secluded lakeside beach, a popular
hotspot for gay men to sunbathe in the nude and sneak off
for casual sex in the nearby woods. On the first day of the
season, he spots the rugged, mustachioed Michel and is
infatuated. Even after Franck witnesses Michel commit a sudden
and shocking crime, it only serves to deepen Franck’s carnal
attraction to the stranger, and the two men descend into a truly
dizzying bout of amour fou. Filmmaker Alain Guiraudie’s tense,
erotic and lurid thriller won the top-directing prize in the Un

1990. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold
War, a flood of information from East Germany makes its way
through Europe. Like most Norwegian children fathered by
the German occupying troops during WWII, Katrine (Juliane
Köhler) was sent to Germany as a child, only able to return to
her Norwegian mother, Ase (Liv Ullmann), long after the war's
end. Not all the war-children were as lucky—most were never
reunited with their parents—and now a German-Norwegian
lawyer is building a case against the Norwegian government
for its exclusionary policy. Although a victim herself, Katrine fears
exposing the darkest secrets of her past.

Foodies will delight at this effervescent comedy set in the
Parisian restaurant world. Seasoned chef Alexandre Lagarde
(Jean Reno) is the famous face of Paris staple and three-star
restaurant Cargo Lagarde. But Stanislaw (Julien Boisselier),
the meddlesome son of his deceased business partner,
wants to modernize the chef’s classic French cuisine, and
cut costs and corners to turn a profit. Jacky (Michaël Youn)
is an oddball self-taught cook and father-to-be who dreams
of making it as a professional chef to provide for his new
family. Fate introduces the two men, and together they cook
up a scheme to save the Cargo Lagarde. Official Selection,
