PARADISE: LOVE [Paradies: Liebe]

The first in arch provocateur Ulrich Seidl's (IMPORT EXPORT, 2007 AFI European Union Film Showcase) "Paradise" trilogy, exploring Christian virtues' collision with worldly realities (PARADISE: FAITH also screens in the showcase; PARADISE: HOPE debuts in 2013). Leaving her teenage daughter in the care of her sister, Teresa (Margarete Tiesel) enjoys some hard-earned R&R at a beach resort in Kenya curiously popular with European ladies of a certain age. The reason soon becomes clear: each morning, local hard-bodied gigolos line up on the beach, ostensibly to sell trinkets to the tourists, but in reality, selling sex. Though not the first to explore sex tourism from this angle, Seidl's film surprises with its candor, artful compositions and moments of humor. Official Selection, 2012 Cannes, Karlovy Vary, Telluride, Toronto Film Festivals.
